History of Antigua Guatemala
This beautiful city is found located in a valley that is surrounded by the volcanoes: Agua, Fuego and Acatenango. It was the third capital of the Capitanía General de Guatemala, which includes a history that has led it to be recognized on an international level as one of the best tourist destinations in Central America.
Today it is recognized as the very noble and very loyal city of the gentlemen of Guatemala , and was the scene for multiple events such as the introduction of the printing pres to region in 1660, and the first university, “La Universidad de San Carlos,” was founded here in 1676.
In 1979 UNESCO declared it Patrimony of Humanity. The city has first class coffee farms, woodcraft studios, traditional candy makers, ceramic and wax artisans, and it is known for its famous jade and silver workshops. The most important celebration for the Catholic population is Easter and principally Holly week. This is when the population is seen enveloped in artistic activities and religious acts. Of the folkloric dances that are presented in Antigua, the dance of the “enmascarados” and “los gigantes” must be mentioned.
The city of Antigua Guatemala rests at 1,500 meters above sea level.
