History of Río Dulce Izabal

Izabal in its surroundings has pretty beaches and exotic places that offer the visitor an ideal paradise to spend an unforgettable vacation. It's the perfect place to fish, scuba dive, water ski and practice all types of other water sports. Also available are archeological centers and places to be in close contact with its beautiful nature. Río Dulce, which begins in lago Izabal, is the port of entry to the Caribbean Sea.

The río Dulce is considered to Guatemala's longest river, approximately 30 miles in length. Following its path the river gets skinnier and passes through the cities of Fronteras and el Relleno, and further on it crosses through a spectacular ravine with steep banks covered in thick vegetation and other jungle fauna.

Its climate is warm and the following activities can be done: birdwatching, visit los maglares and el biotopo Chocón Machacas (manatee reserve), swim in hot waters, or go on a canopy tour in the haciendas of Tijax or Planeta Río.

Livingston

Is the best tourist destination that combines Caribbean beaches with crystal clear water, palm trees, abundant vegetation and white sand, jungle, the splendid Río Dulce canyon with its lagoons and adjacent tributaries; rich wildlife replete with a wide variety of marine and other tropical birds. There are a good selection of hotels and restaurants with all services for any types of needs. Discos, tour operators, and water transport companies are some of the things that Livingston has to offer.

One of the most interesting characteristics of Livingston is the that in this remote corner of Guatemala, 3 different ethnicities live harmoniously: the Garifunas who arrived in 1892 coming from island of Roatan, Honduras, the Hindus arrived from Belize after coming there from India, and lastly the Q'eqchi, who were descendents of the Maya. The Ladinos fit into to social groups with different origins and culture.
